Inspiration

The U.S. foreign-born population reached a record 47.8 million in 2023—an increase of 1.6 million in just one year, marking the largest annual jump since 2000. Yet despite these growing numbers, nearly half of all immigrants say they don’t have enough information to understand how U.S. immigration laws affect them and their families. One in four lives with the fear that they or a loved one could be detained or deported. For us, this isn’t just data—it’s personal. We've witnessed the confusion, stress, and uncertainty firsthand through our friends and family. Despite the stakes, there was no centralized, reliable resource to guide people through the process. So we built one: OnBoard.

What it does

OnBoard is a full-stack web app that provides personalized visa compliance checklists, deadline reminders, and clear explanations of immigration and job-related processes in the U.S.

How we built it

We used SwiftUI for the frontend and Python for the backend to handle user profiles and checklist data. Agentic AI played a key role by providing detailed guidance on how users should proceed through their visa or job application processes.

Challenges we ran into

  • Making legal information digestible
  • Designing checklists that adapt to multiple visa types
  • Ensuring the app remains scalable and secure as user needs grow

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Dynamic checklist generation based on visa type
  • Building a tool that can genuinely help thousands of people

What we learned

  • Full-stack development under tight deadlines
  • How to break down bureaucratic systems into user-friendly tools

What's next for OnBoard

  • Add support for more visa types and job-related workflows
  • Include multilingual support
