Inspiration

As a society we use massive amounts of emissions every single day. In order to bring address this problem it's essential to educate people about how much emissions they're using, as well as to offer them a way to offset their emissions.

What it does

App that uses location data and mode of transport to calculate distance total travelled over a day, taking measurements at 30 second intervals and allowing the user to select their primary mode of transport for the day in order to see how much carbon dioxide they created, and the cost to offset that. There's a donate button allowing the users to donate that cost to a carbon offsetting organisation.

How we built it

We used android studio with Java to make the app.

Challenges we ran into

Hard to give it proper usage tests in the time scale of 24 hours. We had little experience programming android apps so we were learning as we were coding

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud to have made an app which we feel could genuinely benefit the world. We're also happy that we were able to create quite a clean and minimalistic design.

What we learned

We gained a lot of experience in creating Android applications which could help us in the future. In creating this we actually learnt a lot about carbon offsetting, and about the emissions of different modes of transport.

What's next for On The Rocks

The cs3102 network practical : ( Add Google Maps functionality to show movement on the app. Maintain history of day to day emissions for users to track trends. Allow users to input their car model, to precisely calculate emissions.
