Inspiration## 💡 Inspiration
Expecting mothers often struggle with complicated gestational calculations, scattered apps, and overwhelming interfaces. We created OmomaApp to be a warm, reliable, and completely private all-in-one pregnancy companion. Our vision was to craft an intuitive Arabic-first (RTL) experience that functions 100% offline, giving mothers full peace of mind wherever they are.
📱 What it does
- Smart Due Date & Milestone Calculator: Calculates gestational age and countdown using standard pregnancy calculation formulas, accompanied by weekly fetal size comparisons to cute fruits and vegetables.
- Fetal Kick Counter: Tracks daily baby movements with an intuitive session timer to help mothers monitor fetal vitality.
- Contraction Timer: Accurately measures contraction durations and intervals, applying the clinical 5-1-1 rule to help mothers recognize true labor onset.
- Chinese Gender Calendar: An engaging traditional predictor designed purely for fun and family sharing.
- Privacy & Offline-First: Operates seamlessly without an active internet connection, ensuring total privacy for sensitive maternal data.
🛠️ How we built it
Built from the ground up as a native Android application using:
- Kotlin for core business logic and state management.
- Jetpack Compose and Material 3 for modern, fluid, and responsive UI components.
- Kotlin Coroutines for precise timing engines (kick counter and contraction stopwatch).
- Android SharedPreferences for instant, secure local persistence.
🚧 Challenges we ran into
- Crafting a seamless RTL-first (Right-to-Left) interface that looks beautiful and consistent across various screen sizes.
- Implementing an accurate, battery-friendly contraction timing engine that remains stable across background app states.
- Maintaining an offline-first design architecture without relying on third-party cloud servers.
🎓 What we learned
We gained deep expertise in modern Jetpack Compose state architecture, building native accessible UI components for maternal healthcare, and optimizing mobile memory footprints for offline utilities.
🚀 What's next for OmomaApp
- Multi-language localization (French & English).
- Exportable PDF summary reports to share milestones with obstetricians.
- Postpartum recovery and newborn feeding tracking tools.
