Inspiration
Traditional e-commerce websites are designed primarily for desktops and mobile touchscreens. When opened on Smart TVs or Fire TV devices, navigation becomes clunky, text is unreadable from a distance, and the remote control experience is frustrating. We wanted to build a bridge: an app that takes any regular online store URL and instantly converts it into a high-performance, 4K landscape catalog optimized for living rooms and Fire TV remotes.
What it does
OmniShop 4K is an intelligent browsing interface built for Amazon Fire TV and mobile ecosystems.
- Real-Time Data Extraction: Users can enter any online shopping URL or select pre-configured channels. The backend dynamically parses products, titles, images, and prices in real time.
- TV-First 4K Layout: Restructures complicated web page structures into clean, high-resolution horizontal cards tailored for 10-foot viewing.
- D-Pad & Remote Navigation: Fully optimized for standard TV remote controls (up, down, left, right, select) as well as touch devices.
- Instant Previews & Details: Users can inspect products, see clean specifications, and view store images without cluttered web ads or heavy desktop layouts.
How we built it
- Frontend: Built using modern web technologies (HTML5, CSS3, Vanilla JavaScript) structured into an ultra-fast, zero-dependency landscape application designed for Fire OS Web runtime and Vega OS compatibility.
- Backend / API: Cloud-hosted parsing microservice deployed on Render that handles live scraping and normalizes JSON product data.
- Packaging: Tested both as an installable standalone web-app environment and on standard Android/Fire OS browser runtimes to guarantee stable 16:9 landscape rendering.
Challenges we ran into
- Ensuring real-time scrapers stay responsive while extracting multi-product galleries and high-resolution images.
- Optimizing layout recalculation and DOM reflow so that switching between wide viewports renders 4K cards in just seconds without lag.
- Adapting traditional click interactions into fluid D-pad remote navigation states.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Delivering a functional real-time conversion from standard URLs to a TV catalog in under 2 seconds.
- Building a completely self-contained, responsive UI that feels native to Fire TV without requiring heavy third-party client libraries.
What we learned
- How Fire TV and web runtimes handle large card grids and image caching.
- Techniques for optimizing viewport shifts and cold-start mitigations on cloud-hosted backends.
What's next for OmniShop 4K
- Integrating voice shopping intents via Alexa Skills.
- Direct checkout QR code generation to seamlessly hand off purchases from TV screen to mobile phones.
- Offline caching for favorite catalog channels.
