Inspiration

Smart homes often feel like a collection of isolated islands. Your front door communicates with one application, your security camera streams live in another, and your living room entertainment center sits completely disconnected from the rest of your physical ecosystem. We wanted to bridge that gap by turning passive home triggers into proactive, contextual living room experiences.

What it does

OmniCore is an all-in-one smart home command center built for Fire TV and Alexa+. It connects perimeter security triggers from Ring directly to your living room display. When motion or a doorbell press is detected, OmniCore automatically orchestrates the cloud backend to pause active media and overlay a live picture-in-picture (PiP) security stream right on your Fire TV screen.

How we built it

We designed an event-driven serverless architecture using AWS Lambda to ingest and authenticate webhooks from Ring security events. When an event triggers, AWS IoT Core instantly broadcasts the state change via secure MQTT messaging protocols to the Fire TV client app, instructing it to render the dynamic overlay layout without dropping user session state.

Challenges we ran into

Handling real-time device-to-device communication securely without introducing latency was our primary hurdle. Ensuring that webhook payloads from external security APIs mapped smoothly to state directives on a television UI required rigorous fine-tuning of our asynchronous Lambda event loops and JSON routing payloads.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully bridged three traditionally siloed Amazon ecosystems (Ring, Alexa+, and Fire TV) into a unified operational workflow.
  • Built a responsive serverless backend capable of sub-second state dispatching from hardware triggers to media display interfaces.

What we learned

Building across multiple device categories taught us the immense value of event-driven cloud routing. We gained deep practical insight into structuring scalable serverless logic with AWS and managing multi-platform UI state transitions for ten-foot (TV) user interfaces.

What's next for OmniCore

  • Expanding voice command triggers using advanced Alexa+ agentic routing for hands-free security control.
  • Implementing localized data caching via Amazon DynamoDB for historical event auditing.
  • Refining the ambient dashboard UI for personalized widget displays when the TV is idle.
