Inspiration
Modern smart TVs are capable of much more than just video streaming. We wanted to build an ambient dashboard and media hub optimized for Fire TV that gives users quick access to essential widgets, news, and personalized media directly from their remote control.
What it does
OmniCast TV provides a streamlined leanback interface for Fire TV:
- A responsive card-based layout designed for D-pad navigation.
- Real-time widgets displaying updates, media feeds, and dashboard info.
- Fast, low-latency performance tailored for Fire OS devices.
How we built it
Built using standard Android TV / Fire OS development principles:
- UI structured for leanback TV navigation.
- Manifest configured for non-touchscreen, directional remote control support.
- Tested using Android TV emulation.
Challenges we ran into
Designing focus states and remote D-pad navigation required careful handling to make sure every element highlights clearly on a TV display from across the room.
What's next for OmniCast TV
Adding custom widget integration, voice command shortcuts via Alexa, and expanded media format support.
