Inspiration

Traveling is easier than ever, but language barriers still make simple face-to-face conversations difficult. I wanted to build something faster and more natural than typing into a traditional translation app.

What it does

Omilo turns your phone into a real-time AI interpreter. The user simply holds a button, speaks naturally, and Omilo translates the conversation and plays the translated speech in the other person's language.

The goal is to make communication feel closer to a real conversation instead of using a text-based translator.

How I built it

Omilo is built as a mobile application using React Native / Expo, with Supabase for backend services and user management.

AI services handle speech recognition, translation and natural voice generation. RevenueCat manages in-app purchases and access to paid translation minutes.

Challenges I ran into

One of the main challenges was keeping the experience fast enough for a real conversation. Voice recording, transcription, translation and speech generation all need to happen with as little delay as possible.

Another challenge was designing a simple monetization system where users can easily understand how many translation minutes they have available.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I built and published a complete AI translation application as an independent developer, including the mobile app, backend, payments, analytics and AI voice pipeline.

Omilo is already available to real users, which allows me to test the product with real-world usage rather than only as a prototype.

What I learned

Building Omilo taught me a lot about real-time AI APIs, mobile development, App Store distribution, analytics and in-app purchases.

I also learned that building the AI itself is only one part of the challenge: user experience, latency, pricing and onboarding are just as important.

What's next for Omilo

The next step is to make conversations even more fluid, reduce latency and improve the onboarding experience.

I also plan to improve analytics around translation usage and continue experimenting with pricing and RevenueCat-powered purchase flows.
