Get it? Like buff and scuffle
What is Buffle?
Buffle is an online versus or cooperative game where players complete exercises in front of their camera to either deal damage to each other or to enemies. We were inspired by random one-on-one chat apps like Omegle and by Pokémon GO, where players fight raid bosses together. We wanted to create something inspired by those apps but for, as the kids like to say, "push-up fades."
The core idea is that players' webcams detect body movements, and computer vision algorithms evaluate their exercise form. This is used to determine how much damage they deal per repetition. There are a variety of exercises and monsters to fight, or you can always 1v1 against random opponents online.
How we built it
We used Google's MediaPipe for real-time body tracking, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS for the game interface, and PeerJS/WebRTC for online multiplayer functionality.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge was accurately detecting exercises across different camera angles, lighting conditions, and body movements while maintaining responsive gameplay.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud to have successfully integrated movement detection with real-time multiplayer gameplay, video feed, and voice chat, creating a fun and social experience.
What we learned
We gained experience with computer vision, movement detection, and multiplayer development while improving our teamwork, communication, and collaborative problem-solving skills.
