Inspiration

As a home cook frustrated by counterfeit olive oil flooding grocery shelves, I wanted to create a resource that demystifies olive oil quality. I’d bought "extra virgin" oils that tasted off, and realized how many people share this struggle – so I set out to make olive oil literacy accessible.

What it does

The Olive Oil Guide is a mobile-first web app that helps users verify olive oil authenticity, select oils for specific cooking uses, learn about regional origins & varieties, find trusted brands, and master professional tasting techniques. It’s free, focused on real, actionable information for everyday cooks.

How we built it

I started by mapping core user needs (authenticity checks, usage guidance) and designing a mobile-first layout with a warm, earthy color palette. Using React and Bootstrap, I built interactive modules – from yes/no authenticity checklists to usage-based filters – and curated detailed content on olive regions, varieties, and tasting methods. I integrated affiliate links to trusted retailers for practical product access.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing depth of information with simplicity was tough – I wanted to educate without overwhelming users. Ensuring the app was fully responsive across European and US device sizes also required rigorous testing, as mobile usage is core to the design.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating an intuitive tool that turns complex olive oil knowledge into scannable, actionable guidance. The authenticity checker’s clear result framework (Likely Authentic/Questionable/High Risk) makes it easy for users to assess their oils at a glance.

What we learned

I deepened my understanding of olive oil production, fraud patterns, and regional characteristics – and learned how to translate niche expertise into user-friendly design. I also refined my skills in building interactive, mobile-first web experiences that prioritize accessibility.

What's next for this project

I plan to expand the regional coverage to include more Mediterranean producers, add video tutorials for tasting techniques, and refine brand recommendations based on consumer feedback. I also aim to partner with small-scale olive oil producers to highlight authentic, family-owned brands.
