Inspiration The inspiration for Old Medicine stems from a desire to bridge the gap between ancient botanical wisdom and modern accessibility. In an era dominated by synthetic solutions, many people have lost touch with the natural remedies that communities have relied on for generations. We wanted to create a digital bridge that makes identifying and understanding the medicinal properties of plants as simple as a few clicks, ensuring this "ancestral" knowledge isn't forgotten in the digital age.
What it does Old Medicine is a comprehensive botanical health assistant. It allows users to:
Identify & Prescribe: Access a curated database of plants and their traditional medicinal uses.
Multilingual Accessibility: Break down language barriers by providing health-related scripts and information in local languages (such as Telugu).
Educational Repository: Act as a "Sacred Social Network Village" where users can learn about holistic healing, herbalism, and spiritual growth in an environment free from traditional social media distractions.
How we built it The application was built using a robust, containerized architecture to ensure scalability and ease of access:
Frontend/Interface: Designed for a clean, distraction-free user experience.
Backend & Deployment: Containerized using Docker and deployed on Google Cloud Run in the us-west1 region for high availability.
Infrastructure: Managed within a dedicated Google Cloud environment (qwiklabs-gcp-01-0d81a7a3cb4f) to handle web traffic and database queries efficiently.
Challenges we ran into Deployment Logistics: Configuring the containerized environment to communicate seamlessly with the Cloud Run service required precise networking and region-specific configurations.
Content Authenticity: Ensuring that the botanical information provided remained true to traditional practices while being presented in a clear, digital format.
Language Integration: Formatting scripts in different languages while maintaining the technical integrity of the web application.
Accomplishments that we're proud of Successful Deployment: Successfully hosting the application on Cloud Run, ensuring it is live and accessible via a public URL.
Clean User Space: Creating a community-focused area that is entirely ad-free and focused purely on the user's health journey and education.
Multimodal Utility: Moving beyond just a "website" to a platform that can generate scripts for video content and community sharing.
What we learned Building this project taught us the importance of DevOps in the creative process; the code is only as good as its deployment. We also gained a deeper appreciation for botanical science and the technical challenge of translating subjective traditional knowledge into a structured digital database.
What's next for Old Medicine AI Integration: Implementing an AI-driven image recognition system to allow users to upload photos of plants for instant identification and medicinal analysis.
Voice Interactivity: Developing a multilingual voice-call system so that users in underserved areas can access this information via basic feature phones without needing a smartphone.
Expanded Database: Growing the library of "Sacred Wisdom" to include more regional herbal practices from around the globe.
