Inspiration

We were inspired by the charm of vintage photography and the hidden stories within old snapshots of Kaohsiung. By bringing these moments to life through animation, we celebrate the city’s rich cultural heritage and everyday beauty.

What it does

This short AI-powered film transforms a series of old black-and-white photos into lively scenes, animating the people and surroundings as if the past had come alive. Through motion, music, and subtle narrative, we evoke nostalgia while reimagining history.

How we built it

We used AI image-to-video models (such as Runway and Pika) to animate still images with stylized movement and lighting. Each scene was restored, color-graded, and selectively enhanced to emphasize depth and emotion. Background elements like ambient sounds and city texture were added using generative tools.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing between authenticity and artistic enhancement was key. It was difficult to animate old photos without distorting facial expressions or losing historical integrity. We also faced frame interpolation issues when trying to mimic cinematic flow.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully merged nostalgic aesthetics with modern AI filmmaking, creating a short film that resonates emotionally while respecting the source material. Audiences commented on how it felt like “watching their grandparents’ world come alive.”

What we learned

We learned the power of subtle motion, facial restoration, and ambient sound in evoking memory. More importantly, we discovered how AI can be a bridge between generations — not just a tool, but a storyteller.

What's next for Old Frame, New Pulse

We plan to expand the project to other cities in Taiwan, inviting people to submit their own vintage photos for animation — preserving local culture and memories through AI storytelling.
