Fighting Addiction Through Education (FATE), Inc. was created in Oklahoma in 2009 to address substance abuse issues through the provision of substance abuse prevention education. FATE is committed to “changing the culture” with respect to substance abuse and, to accomplish that goal, created Oklahoma Life of an Athlete (OKLOA). OKLOA provides a research-based approach to prevention of substance abuse issues with student athletes. OKLOA includes dynamic, interactive, online training for athletes and coaches about the impact of alcohol and other drugs on athletic performance, as well as live presentations and assistance on re-writing athletic codes, developing student leadership, and promoting coaching effectiveness and community support. For purposes of this application, the online component of OKLOA is highlighted. OKLOA aims to prevent the use of alcohol, prescription drugs, and other illicit substances among college athletes who are campus opinion leaders and who can be positive role models and influencers.
