Inspiration

We got a lot of out inspiration from Cookie Clicker, in fact the main gameplay loop is directly based on it. The apocalyptic, and seeing the scale of your destruction comes directly from Plague Inc. These 2 combined give for a depressing atmosphere that will leave a long lasting impression.

What it does

The gameplay loop is inspired by cookie clicker, where you click on oil to gain money to buy upgrades such as employees to mine for you and oil fields to increase daily revenue. The map and background are constantly changing based on conditions. A thermostat tracks temperature and changes the world map, growing more and more destroyed.

How we built it

We used Unity to build our 2D environment, primarily coding in C#. All art was created internally on Clip Studio Paint. Pictures were cropped and edited on Gimp.

Challenges we ran into

It was our whole team's first time doing Unity game development, and writing in C#. It was a challenge navigating through everything, and trying to solve seemingly basic problems proved difficult following old, outdated tutorials.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We managed to successfully create the game we envisioned and implement all the features we wanted. Over coming every challenge we faced was amazing and it was an incredible experience.

What we learned

We learned a lot about game development, Unity, C# and working together as a team in a short time period. Mentors, other hackers and teammates made the experience very helpful.

What's next for Oiligarchy: The game about how profit turns to pain

We plan on building up our Unity skills and possible try to implement more features we wanted to add, but didn't have the time for.
