Inspiration
As an artist herself Daria knows the struggle of art blocks and lack of creativity, so the idea for Oh Sketch came very naturally. Over the past years as Daria has been growing her artist community on Instagram she realised that it is a common problem among many creatives, and decided to build a creativity app that would offer an endless supply of drawing ideas. I readily jumped on board with my developer expertise and a lot of hard work later we are looking to release the first version of the app.
What it does
Oh Sketch is a creativity app offering daily art challenges and drawing prompts. The main goal of our product is to provide drawing ideas and supporting content to artists who struggle to otherwise get inspired, and help them establish a habit of consistently practising their art. We believe that daily art challenges is a fun and enjoyable way to achieve just that while also engaging users in a community and helping them discover fellow artists.
How we built it
After it was clear what the goal of the app is, Daria started by creating screen designs in Figma which I started implementing once they were ready. Oh Sketch is a React Native app using Expo, which I have a lot of experience with already, so we could move fast and try out ideas quick. This time I wanted to give Supabase a try instead of developing a custom backend, and it worked out fantastic. We use it to allow users to save challenges and prompts as well as to host all the content in the app. For the in-app purchases we use RevenueCat and their new Paywall feature. We decided to go for the footer variant and implement our own custom paywall behind it. Other than that we use Sentry to keep track of errors and PostHog for app analytics.
Challenges we ran into
A big challenge was prioritising which features will be part of the MVP and what we add later. We tried to deliver a limited set of features with great quality instead of too many features which are not well implemented.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
As AI is causing turbulence in the art community, we are committed to cherishing the wonder of human creation. All content in Oh Sketch app, including random prompts, challenges and articles has been written by a real person.
What we learned
Creating a unique design takes a lot of work and carries a certain amount of risk with it, however we think it pays off in the long run. We also learned a lot about Supabase and how we can use it for ideas in the future! I also gave Unistyles and RevenueCat's Paywall feature a try for the first time which both worked out fantastic.
What's next for Oh Sketch!
We are working on adding functionality that allows to upload your art to Oh Sketch and provides statistical overview of users' art journey.
