Inspiration

Campus communication often breaks down when internet connectivity is weak or unavailable. During events, in remote areas, or even inside large campuses, students struggle to stay connected. We were inspired to solve this by asking: “Can we build a system that works even without the internet?” This led to the idea of an offline-first campus network powered by local connections like WiFi, LAN, or hotspots.

What it does

Offline Campus Network enables:

💬 Real-time chat between users on the same local network 📁 File sharing without internet dependency 📡 Live monitoring of network health and activity 👥 Detection of active users and connected nodes 🚨 Broadcast or priority alerts within the campus

In short, it acts like a mini WhatsApp + Google Drive + Network Monitor, but fully functional on a local intranet.

How we built it Frontend: React + Tailwind CSS for a responsive dashboard and chat UI Backend: Node.js + Express for handling APIs and connections Real-time Layer: Socket.IO for instant messaging and updates Networking: Devices connect via local WiFi/LAN forming a mesh-like system File System: Local file indexing and sharing across nodes AI Integration: Gemini API for smart replies and assistance

We also implemented a Campus Overview Dashboard to visualize:

Network health Active users File statistics Live system load Challenges we ran into ⚠️ Discovering devices reliably on the same network ⚠️ Maintaining stable communication without internet ⚠️ Syncing messages across multiple nodes ⚠️ Handling limited bandwidth for file transfers ⚠️ Designing a scalable system in a decentralized environment Accomplishments that we're proud of 🚀 Built a working offline communication system 📡 Achieved real-time messaging over a local network 📊 Created a live dashboard for network monitoring 🔗 Enabled file sharing without cloud dependency 🤖 Integrated AI into a non-traditional (offline-first) system What we learned How to design offline-first and decentralized systems Working with WebSockets for real-time apps Handling network instability and peer communication Building efficient systems without relying on cloud services Integrating AI (Gemini) into real-time environments What's next for Offline Campus Network 🔐 Add end-to-end encryption for secure communication 🌐 Improve true peer-to-peer mesh networking 🏫 Enable multi-campus connectivity (federated networks) 🤖 Expand AI features for smarter collaboration 📱 Build a mobile app for wider accessibility
