Inspiration

I researched feature discussions on Reddit to understand what people wanted from an offline media player. That research helped shape the features in Offly.

The idea was simple. Play the music and videos you own, organise them the way you want and keep listening without an internet connection or a streaming account.

I also wanted the player to feel personal, with different looks that carry through the app, player and interactive widgets.

What it does

Offly is a free offline music and video player for iPhone and iPad.

  • Import files through the Files app or transfer them from a computer over Wi-Fi.
  • Organise your library, create playlists and resume where you stopped.
  • Access your library and control playback through CarPlay.
  • Use crossfade to blend one song into the next, with a duration from 1 to 10 seconds.
  • Adjust the sound with a ten-band equalizer and set a sleep timer.
  • Choose from seven Looks, including Cassette Pop, Cryo Silver and Amber Cockpit.
  • Use interactive widgets to play, pause, skip tracks and start playlists from the Home Screen.
  • Control playback with Siri and Shortcuts.

All features are free. Optional purchases support development without locking features behind a subscription.

How I built it

I built Offly using Swift and SwiftUI, with integrations for CarPlay, Siri, Shortcuts and interactive widgets.

RevenueCat handles optional one-time contributions and monthly or yearly support subscriptions. Users can support development in whichever way suits them, while everyone gets the complete player.

The different Looks extend across the app, player and interactive widgets to keep the experience consistent.

Research and feature decisions

Reddit was part of my feature research. I looked at discussions about offline players and used them to inform what Offly should offer.

The research helped me think beyond basic playback and consider how people organise, access and listen to their own media. Offly brings library organisation, CarPlay, crossfade, interactive widgets and different player Looks together in one app.

What I am proud of

Offly reached 121 TestFlight testers before launching on the App Store. Having that many people try something I built is a milestone I am proud of.

It gives people a player for their own music and videos, with control over how it sounds and looks, while keeping every feature free.
