Inspiration
As social creations, the pandemic has been a very isolating experience for us one way or another. We might neglect our health and holiday blues are worse than ever considering restrictions of family gatherings. I felt inspired to create this Chrome Extension as it can be beneficial to any individual struggling to get through the holidays in such unpredictable times.
What it does
Official Elf can we split in three main parts. We have a home page where the user is greeted with an inspiring and thoughtful quote. Each time they click the extension, there is a new quote. A simple sentence can help someone get through the day so I made sure to give the quotes a section of their own. The second part is a Journal. Here, users can input the date they write, their mood and space to talk about their day. Lastly, the third section is a activities/help tab. Users can explore different activities in the cards provided such as baking, music, etc. There is also a help section, providing someone with free mental health resources whenever they need them.
How we built it
After creating a quick layout on paper and a list of all needed files, I transferred that into VS Code where I primarily used HTML and JavaScript to create my project.
Challenges we ran into
The challenges I ran into where figuring out the right files I needed in order to build a Chrome extension as this was my first time doing so.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud that I was able to figure out how to develop a fully functional extension. It not only runs well but has interactive features such as links and forms.
What we learned
I learned how to adapt to the problems I ran into when learning something completely new. I always felt most comfortable with websites but by taking the first step to create something different, I was able to learn so much and build a greater appreciation for the different things we can create in tech.
What's next for Official Elf
The next steps for Official Elf would be to create a system where users can see their past journal entries as well as some sort of timer which could show them the quotes without opening the extension. This application does not only have to be Christmas related as the Holiday Blues could be only one aspect of someone's declining mental health.
