Inspiration
Inspired by the "Invisible Grind"—the corporate reality where completing 100% of your tasks is treated as the silent minimum, never earning a "thank you," while falling short by even 1% results in immediate dismissal. We wanted to expose the dark irony where managers ignore your overtime but obsess over you being "10 minutes late."
What it does
Office Perks is a high-stress "Mopanin" simulator. Players must navigate a high-contrast dashboard, trading their GPA and health for productivity stats. The game mechanics are intentionally rigged to reflect corporate bias: you get zero recognition for hitting targets, but the "FORGET INCENTIVE!!" screen triggers the moment you show a human weakness, like being slightly late.
How we built it
Built using React, Vite, and Tailwind CSS. We implemented a frantic game loop where "Focus" decays rapidly. The UI was designed to feel like a high-stakes monitor, using glowing red "Overtime" states and soul-crushing "Fired" overlays to create a sense of constant, unrewarded pressure.
Challenges we ran into
The hardest part was balancing the "Cynicism" of the UI. We had to ensure the game felt playable while maintaining the theme that the system is fundamentally unfair. Creating the "Incentive Denied" screen was a challenge in visual storytelling—using chaotic imagery to represent the manager's irrational anger.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of how the game captures "Negative Reinforcement." There is no "Win" screen that feels good; there is only the relief of not being fired... until the next shift. We successfully turned the frustration of a toxic workplace into a satirical speedrun experience.
What we learned
We learned that the most effective satire comes from "Rigged Mechanics." By making the manager's expectations impossible to satisfy, we forced the player to feel the same hopelessness and burnout that real-world employees face when their hard work goes unappreciated.
What's next for Office Perks (BBA Degree Speedrun)
We want to add a "Performance Review" mini-game where no matter what you select, your manager finds a reason to deny your promotion. We also plan to add a "Toxic Positivity" meter where you have to click "I love my job" to prevent being fired for "bad vibes."
