Inspiration
As computer science students, we wanted to implement the skillsets we gained during our studies to make a tangible impact in the world. The idea of using technology for social good was incredibly enticing to us. We began by researching the most pressing problems and discovered that food waste is a major global issue. Did you know that between 30% - 40% of all food produced in the U.S. is wasted and ends up in landfills? (USDA). Even more startling, nearly 60 million tons of food are discarded in the United States every year. Moreover, more than 80% of Americans throw away perfectly good, consumable food simply because they misunderstand expiration labels like “sell by,” “use by,” “expires on,” “best before,” or “best by” (RTS).
What it does
OfferMart bridges the gap between businesses and consumers by:
- Listing Near-Expiry Products: Businesses can list items that are nearing their optimal quality dates, providing an outlet for surplus inventory.
- Offering Steep Discounts: Consumers gain access to quality food and products at significantly reduced prices.
- Educating on Expiration Labels: The platform clarifies common misconceptions about expiration dates, helping users make informed decisions.
- Reducing Waste: By redirecting products that would otherwise be discarded, OfferMart plays a part in minimizing environmental waste.
- Empowering Communities: Both sellers and buyers contribute to a more sustainable, eco-friendly marketplace, driving positive social impact.
How we built it
With our research in hand, we set out to build OfferMart, a website that connects sellers with inventory nearing its best-buy dates to consumers looking for steep discounts. Here's how we approached the project:
- Concept Development: We brainstormed and validated the idea by assessing the impact of food waste and the confusion surrounding expiration labels.
- Technical Implementation: Leveraging our computer science skills, we built a user-friendly platform using modern web development technologies. This involved:
- Designing an intuitive interface for both sellers and buyers.
- Implementing secure payment and inventory management systems.
- Ensuring scalability and reliability to handle real-time data.
Challenges we ran into
Building OfferMart was a learning experience filled with both technical and conceptual challenges:
- Research Complexity: Understanding the full scope of food waste and its environmental impact required extensive research and data analysis.
- Technical Hurdles: Integrating multiple systems for seamless inventory tracking and secure transactions was more complex than anticipated.
- User Trust and Adoption: Educating both businesses and consumers about the benefits of our platform and overcoming the stigma associated with near-expiry products will take time and effort. Despite these challenges, every obstacle is an opportunity to learn, adapt, and improve our solution.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are incredibly proud of what we've achieved with OfferMart:
- Successful Platform: We built a fully functional website connecting sellers with consumers.
- Robust Technical Implementation: Integrated secure payment gateways, intuitive user interfaces, and effective inventory management systems.
- Sustainability Impact: Contribution to raising awareness about food waste and demonstrated the potential of technology in driving social change.
What we learned
Through our research, we learned that:
- Food waste is an enormous problem: It not only affects the economy but also has severe environmental consequences.
- Label confusion is a major contributor: Misinterpretation of expiration dates causes a significant amount of edible food to be discarded.
- There is a market need: There is a potential for a platform that bridges the gap between businesses with surplus near-expiry products and consumers seeking affordable, quality food.
Conclusion
OfferMart is our commitment to leveraging computer science for social good. By creating a marketplace that connects businesses needing to move near-expiry inventory with consumers looking for affordable deals, we aim to reduce food waste significantly. Our journey has not only enhanced our technical skills but also deepened our resolve to drive positive change in the world.
