Inspiration

We were inspired by the theme of community, trust, and simplicity to identify a problem people in our community face and solve it. We chose to tackle the issue of finding off-campus housing because it is a challenging task many people have to undertake, and there are clear ways we can help improve people's experience with the off-campus housing search.

What it does

Students can create profiles on Off Campus Compass where they input their housing preferences and get matched with other students that have similar preferences. Additionally, Off Campus Compass gives people a place to post reviews of landlords and helps students find critical information that preexisting house-listing platforms often lack. Finally, we will provide an easy way to view all housing options so that people can avoid having to network extensively with upperclassmen just to get basic details about good housing options.

How we built it

We used figma to make a model of the user interface and created a basic web interface and backend using nextjs.

Challenges we ran into

As this was our first-ever hackathon, we didn't really know what to expect. We also didn't have much experience with web development and wanted to build a web app, so we had to learn new technologies fast.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We have a figma mock-up and a website with an example of a user profile.

What we learned

We gained skills with web development and figma, and practiced brainstorming, planning, and developing our own project from scratch.

What's next for Off Campus Compass

We hope that after we gain more skills in web development that we can turn this concept into a fully functional web application that the Cornell community can use to solve the problem of stressful housing searches.
