Virtual Reality: The User and Sensation

As game developers, Brian and David are always eager to push the boundaries of player sensation. With virtual reality still at its infancy, the opportunity to hack and develop for hardware such as the Myo and Oculus Rift present a unique challenge to create an immersive and engaging experience for gamers and non-gamers alike.

The Experiment

While brainstorming for ideas to hack on the Oculus, Brian and David concluded that the user's experience must be:

  1. Beautiful
  2. Unplayable without the Oculus Essentially, the two USC Computer Science Games students faced the challenge of using Oculus as the core mechanic of the game rather than as an after thought add-on. What kind of game would give the user an advantage when using the Oculus than without it.

While brainstorming ideas for the Myo band, Brian and David faced the challenge of user intuition. When should a Myo game choose fist clench versus open-palm detection? Both of these students are eager to learn how users interact with the duo Myo / Oculus combination and what this technology can mean for the future.

Empowerment

The focus of OculoMyo Mage is to give the player the unique feeling of controlling magic right from the palms of their hands. Players are meant to feel powerful with Myo magic and aware of the environment with the Oculus.
