Inspiration
Our goal revolves around the central purpose of public access to education using AI to simplify complex subjects into digestible pieces of media that anyone is able to understand. Often a barrier to entry can be complex or philosophical discussion on topics by experts, furthermore, experts often do not have the platform to address their concerns within their field publicly. We decided our mission would be to uplift knowledgeable individuals to reach greater audiences or typically less knowledgeable audiences. We used applications such as Masotdon and Medium as our main sources of inspiration because they align with the goals of project.
What it does
OctoTalks is an open-source news website that breaks down complex subject matter to educate a larger population of people. The website uses the power of natural language processing models to analyze articles and check for credibility and then summarize the articles for easier content consumption.
How we built it
The heart of the code was developed using the tensorflow, chatgpt, and beautiful soup libraries of Python to create engines that analyzed articles. We then hosted this data on our webpages. We determined that the website would need a dat firebase/google cloud, python, AI, and UX tools to further advance credible news in the communication of complex subjects using our experience in python and HTML.
Challenges we ran into
-Static v. dynamic hosting -APIs json cutting out due to length -Google API authentication -PHP & SQL integration
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of managing our time such that we have a presentable product.
What we learned
-Static v. dynamic hosting -Website development process -General HTML -Firebase hosting -Power of cloud computing
What's next for OctoTalks
- Categorical tabs to breakdown specific content to interested individuals.
- A “like” system that improves article visibility based on content likes, further visibility granted to credible profiles liking that content. This would display this content to higher portions of individuals' feeds.
- An article teaching system that goes through concepts addressed in each article and then breaks them down into lessons. AI would generate these lesson lists for individuals through article analysis. (ex. Defining macro or microeconomics, or concepts in physics when these subjects are addressed in an article)
- Creator profiles that can filter our experiences, projects, certifications, and educational background w/ confirmations to university databases so we have "expert profiles" so actual academics can contribute better
