Inspiration
We wanted to tackle the problem that most people care about climate change but don’t know how to reduce their personal carbon footprint effectively. By combining AI, gamification, and a visually engaging octopus avatar, we aimed to create a tool that makes sustainability actionable, fun, and motivating for everyone.
What it does
OctoClimate is an AI-powered personal climate companion that tracks your daily habits across transport, energy, diet, water, and waste. It:
- Calculates your personal carbon footprint
- Gives daily actionable recommendations to reduce emissions
- Shows future impact predictions of following its advice
- Gamifies progress with badges, achievements, and an animated octopus avatar
- Optional: rewards milestones with NFT achievements
How we built it
- Frontend: React.js + Tailwind CSS for a clean, interactive dashboard
- Backend: Node.js + Express, with Firebase/Supabase for user data storage
- AI/ML: Python + Flask API to calculate carbon footprint and predict impact using public carbon datasets
- Visualisation: D3.js/Chart.js for animated octopus tentacles representing each sustainability category
- Optional Blockchain: Polygon testnet + Alchemy for NFT rewards
Challenges we ran into
- Data availability: Finding reliable datasets for calculating accurate personal carbon footprints
- Real-time predictions: Ensuring the AI model could process multiple user inputs and produce fast results
- Visualisation: Designing the octopus avatar to clearly represent 8 categories while staying intuitive
- Gamification logic: Balancing meaningful rewards without overcomplicating the interface
