Growing up, I was regarded as a dumb kid simply because I was a slow learner. Now that I am an adult, I understand How I learn and how much I need to take in to grasp concepts. The traditional education cannot cater for all types of students so parents have to find ways to help struggling kids, which is often not easy and can be cost effective.
We built Octo to help high school and middle school kids study on their own, at their own pace in an engaging and interactive environment. Octo is built to teach students based on their learning pace, age, grade and country's education standard in a personalized manner.
We leveraged Google's powerful generative AI (gemini-1.5-pro-latest) with NextJS and Django to bring Octo to life.
One of the first challenges we ran into was choosing a prompt type. We initially spent a lot of time with Structured Prompts since it seemed like what our use case needed but when we did'nt get the results we wanted, we reverted to text prompt and that worked perfectly for us.
I must say, I am proud of everything we did to bring this project to life. However, the one thing I am proud of the most is the fact that we have potentially built something that could help kids become better in their academics. Something I wish I had myself as a slow learner.
We learned that building something meaningful was how to build without burnout.
What's next for Octo - The Smart Learning AI tutor? My team and I have decided to take it upon ourselves to see if we could get real students to use Octo starting in my neighborhood. From there, the sky is our limit.
