Inspiration

What it does
Takes an image of a receipt and parses it, outputs the data in a CSV file storing the: item and amount and store name. Can take the information and understand how much you spend at each store and on what items. Puts the item in a category as well.
1st iteration: parse shopping list - outputs CSV file with metadata: date, time, shop name and fields: item amount
2nd iteration: combines many files to show overall spending habits
How I built it
Backend:
- python library (pytesseract)
- python
- sqlite (stores the data information as an intermediate, outputs it as a csv)
Front end: react native for interacting with user; implemented as a web app
- User uploads a photo of their receipt
- OCR tool reads it
- Parses the information and stores it into sql plugin fetched through python script
- This information is stored in an sql table
- The table outputs a csv file; responds to http request for data
- front end sends a request for a csv file; displays onto screen/user can download it
