Inspiration

We have personal contacts who struggle with pornography addiction. We sympathize with our friends who have fallen into social anxiety and overspending money on premium pornography because of their addiction. Further research into the addiction revealed that millions of people are affected by pornography addiction. There is a severe lack of resources available for addicts because of social stigma.

What it does

Ocelot is a mobile app that gamifies the recovery process for pornography addicts. Users are invited into a Clash of Clans type world where their objective is to expand their village. Users earn in-game coins by staying abstinent from pornography and by completing healthy tasks such as exercise. Users will use coins to purchase buildings and other add-ons to expand and customize their village. In this way, users earn their in-game progress with real-life achievements.

How we built it

We created Oceot using C# scripts and designing the Ul for gameplay on Unity. We began with a downloaded template so that we can start with some basic working features. We supplemented the template code with features that are designed to motivate addicts to reach their abstinence goals.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge we ran into is contacting a hard to reach audience. Pornography addiction is a taboo topic that many are reluctant to talk about. There are limited platforms that we can reach our audience on, and many people do not want to talk about their addiction. While we have been able to interview 15 people both over Zoom and through chat to learn about their journey, reaching out to potential users requires sensitivity and persistence.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

One accomplishment that we are proud of is that we began this journey with limited technical and entrepreneurial experience. We have networked with entrepreneurs to learn about user outreach, creating an MVP, and how to work effectively as a team. We have also been training ourselves to use Unity and program in C#.

What we learned

In addition to developing technical and entrepreneurial skills, we have gained sympathy for the people we have worked with and have grown as people. We believe that nobody should have to recover from addiction alone and that our audience deserves a quality resource to help them on their recovery journey.

What's next for Ocelot

We will continue to develop our MVP, and we aim to have our app published by the end of the year. We also believe that being in contact with our users and learning about their needs is the cornerstone of an effective product. We will also continue to learn from our users so that we can be sure that Ocelot will improve their lives.
