Inspiration
I was inspired by water fountains that display how many plastic bottles have been saved. Every time you filled your water bottle up, the number increased. Seeing that number go up makes the impact feel real and motivating. This idea motivated me to create something similar.
What it does
OceanHelper is a web app that helps users track their environmental cleanups in a fun and engaging way. It makes it easy to log items, view progress, and understand the types of plastics being collected.
How I built it
I used HTML/CSS to build and design the layout, and JavaScript for all the interactive features. Like the cleanup logging, dashboards, challenges, badges, and the simulated plastic identification system.
Challenges we ran into
Trying to design the plastic identifier to be believable without integrating AI. Requiring lots of fine-tuning.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Building an interactive app from scratch and adding gamification factors like a leaderboard and badges. Making the experience more motivating and enjoyable for users.
What we learned
I learned about different types of plastics and their recyclability, and how to present that information clearly to users through UI (User Interface) design. I also learned how to simulate processes, like random selection, to create interactive features even without real AI integration.
What's next for Oceanhelper
AI integration, along with database implementation, so that users can save their progress, and developing mobile app versions so that people can track their cleanups on the go.
