Inspiration
Ocean pollution affects ecosystems, coastal economies, and marine biodiversity worldwide. However, most environmental responses are reactive — by the time pollution is detected and cleanup begins, damage has already occurred.
We built OceanGuard to shift environmental response from reaction to prediction.
What it does
OceanGuard is a software platform that:
Monitors ocean health indicators across coastal cities
Predicts short-term debris and pollution movement
Identifies high-risk environmental zones
Prioritizes cleanup operations
Generates AI-driven environmental summaries
The system enables earlier intervention and smarter resource allocation.
How we built it
OceanGuard was built as a full-stack web application.
The frontend uses React and Tailwind CSS to create an interactive dashboard and 3D global visualization.
The backend processes environmental data and runs predictive models using AI APIs to generate short-term forecasts. The system updates continuously to simulate real-time monitoring.
We integrated AI tools to analyze trends, summarize environmental risk, and support decision-making.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was ensuring real-time performance while running predictive analysis. Environmental forecasting requires frequent updates, and optimizing data pipelines was critical.
Another challenge was presenting complex AI outputs in a clear and user-friendly way so that the platform remained accessible.
Accomplishments we're proud of
Built a working predictive environmental monitoring system
Integrated AI forecasting with interactive visualization
Created a scalable architecture that can expand to additional regions
Demonstrated practical environmental impact through early risk detection
What we learned
We learned that predictive AI can play a meaningful role in environmental response, but usability and clarity are just as important as technical sophistication.
We also gained experience building a real-time, AI-supported decision system from end to end.
What's next for OceanGuard
Next steps include:
Integrating real satellite and sensor feeds
Partnering with environmental NGOs
Adding community reporting features
Expanding predictive models to additional environmental issues
