Inspiration
Oil spills cause severe damage to marine ecosystems, yet detecting spills early and identifying their possible sources remains challenging. We were inspired to build a solution that uses AI and satellite imagery to detect oil spills and support environmental investigations.
What it does
OceanForensics analyzes satellite imagery to detect potential oil spills, identify affected areas, and investigate possible spill origins. It aims to support faster response, environmental monitoring, and accountability.
How we built it
We developed a web-based platform that integrates satellite imagery, AI-powered oil spill detection, and a backend API. The frontend communicates with the detection service to process imagery and present results, helping users understand potential spill locations and related findings.
Challenges we ran into
Integrating the AI detection service with the frontend and backend was challenging. We also faced API connectivity issues, deployment difficulties, and the challenge of presenting detection results reliably while accounting for the limitations of satellite imagery and model predictions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a working prototype that connects AI-based oil spill detection with a web interface. We are proud of bringing satellite intelligence and environmental forensics together into a solution focused on a real-world environmental problem.
What we learned
We gained practical experience in AI integration, API development, deployment, debugging, and full-stack system integration. We also learned that reliable environmental monitoring requires careful validation, accurate data, and responsible interpretation of AI predictions.
