Inspiration
To address the severe global crisis of over 8 million tons of plastic entering the ocean annually, our project was directly inspired by the urgent need to prevent the collapse of essential ocean ecosystems and end the suffering of marine life. This motivation led us to create a website not just for education, but for action, which is why we added many user interactive features. These features include an interactive map, a game for users to play, and a quiz an user can take designed to actively engage visitors.
What it does
Our website is designed to educate, engage, and inspire action to reduce ocean waste. Instead of being just another informational site, it includes multiple interactive and learning-focused features that help users truly understand the issue.
How we built it
We built our project through a clear, multi-step process, starting with an Research Phase where we gathered data from various organizations. Next, we structured the entire site by planning the layout and defining all major pages, including Causes, Effects, Solutions, and many more. During the Design Process, we established a cohesive look using a calming ocean-themed color palette and selected impactful visuals. The core of the work was Coding the Website, using HTML for structure, CSS for design, and embedding all interactive elements. Finally, we finished with Testing & Edits to ensure all links worked, all elements were aligned, and the navigation was smooth across all devices.
Challenges we ran into
- Finding reliable information, many websites had outdated or exaggerated statistics.
- Design decisions, finding images that were powerful but not too graphic
- Time Management, balancing research, writing, and coding as a group took planning ## Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Our ability to collaborate together and produce and output
- Conducted accurate and reliable research
- Spread a message that aligns with the SDG goals and the given prompt ## What we learned
- Understanding the effects of ocean pollution
- How to do good and siginficant reserach and how to use different IDE's
- Problem solving and critical thinking ## What's next for OceanAware
