🌊OCEAN WAVE: A Multimodal Neural Interface for Voice and Vision
💡Inspiration
Millions of children grow up without a reliable way to express what they think or feel. Ocean Wave was created to give them a voice that feels natural and immediate. By understanding both what a child selects and what they see around them, the system transforms simple inputs into meaningful speech—helping them participate, respond, and connect in real time.. 🚀
📣Ocean Wave eliminates this friction. It is a unified multimodal-intelligence platform that acts as a "Sighted Guide" and "Eloquent Voice," powered by a Google-centric neural architecture. Millions of individuals—from post-laryngectomy patients to children with Acquired Aphasia or seniors with Parkinson’s—face a profound "communication and perception gap." 🌍
"🌊Ocean Wave is a real-time multimodal interface powered by Gemini 3. By launching with Gemini 3, we establish a scalable bridge between user intent and expressive communication. As this infrastructure evolves, Ocean Wave grows with its users—transforming assistive tools into a unified system that enables natural speech generation and context-aware interaction. Today, we provide an interface. Tomorrow, we enable seamless digital independence." 🕊️
🛑The Problem: The Accessibility Gap 🚧
Current devices fall into two extremes, leaving a "missing middle" that Ocean Wave fills.
💰 Dedicated High-Tech Devices: Systems like Tobii Dynavox cost between $3,000 and $15,000.
📉 Low-Tech Alternatives: Picture boards are static and can’t handle complex, real-world conversations.
📂 Beyond the "Grid Prison": Current AAC devices trap children in endless folders.(e.g., Categories > Food > Snacks > Fruit > Apple). A child with aphasia or low vision often gives up before finding the word.
👶1. The Pediatric Crisis: Children Without a Voice
For children, aphasia and low vision are "developmental cages." 🕸️
🧠 Aphasia (Acquired & Developmental): In 2026, it is estimated that 1 in 10 children worldwide requires communication support. In the USA, approximately 1 in 14 children (7.2%) are affected.Specifically, about 5,000 to 10,000 children are diagnosed with "true" acquired aphasia each year, but millions more struggle with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).
🌎 Global Impact: Over 20 million children worldwide are estimated to be non-verbal or severely speech-impaired.
👓 Low Vision: WHO data confirms 19 million children are visually impaired globally, with 90% living in low-resource settings.
🏃 The "Survival" Reality: Without Ocean Wave, these children survive through "bodily-tactile" communication—gestures or grunts. They are often excluded from education because high-tech devices are too heavy or too expensive for a playground. 🎒
✨What Ocean Wave Does
Ocean Wave turns a simple tablet into a friendly, dynamic playmate. 🧸
🗣️ 1. Intelligent AAC (Communication) A motor-accessible board where users select symbols. Instead of robotic output, the Gemini 3 Refinement engine transforms telegraphic emoji sequences into natural language, restoring linguistic dignity.
Example: "Water want" ➡️ "I would like some water, please." 💧
Linguistic Dignity Input: "Water... thirsty"
Output: "I'm feeling quite thirsty; could I have a cool glass of water to refresh myself?" 💧
📸 2. Context-Aware Vocabulary (The "Context Cam") Instead of digging through icons, the "Context Cam" uses Gemini 3 to analyze the environment. A multimodal "eye" snaps a photo of the surroundings and instantly synthesizes a curated set of 5 context-relevant emojis📚🎨 to meet the user's immediate needs. Whether it's Colours in a classroom or Food and Books at home, then user selects emojis and clicks refine and Ocean Wave removes the barrier of navigation—turning a single glance into instant, dignified speech. 🍳🍎
Social Belonging: It sees a toy or a friend and instantly gives the child the emojis to say, "Want to play?" 🤝
👁️ 3. Vision Pal (Sighted Guide) A real-time, conversational AI assistant. Using the Gemini Multimodal Live API, it processes live video to identify items, read documents, warn of obstacles, and answer questions with low latency. Vision Pal turns the phone's camera into a talking eye that analyzes live visual input to generate context-aware, real-time descriptive guidance⚡
🎙️ 4. The "Eden Assistant" Gateway (Simplified Access) Eden is our solution for total independence for those who cannot see buttons. 🌈
How it works: The user just taps the screen anywhere.
Voice Guidance: Eden speaks: "Hi there, I’m Eden. You're on the sign in page. Tap anywhere again to open Vision Pal!" 🔊 This provides exclusive guidance for low vision or vision loss to open the app with just a "tap anywhere" feature.
One-Tap Execution: A second tap anywhere automatically routes the user to Vision Pal. Result: Zero searching, zero frustration. 🎯
ENTER as Guest Observer Bar for AAC users ,they can click the white sign in bar and they have 2 option A - Ocean wave AAC and E floating circle-Vision pal for low vision
🛠️How We Built It
Powered by a Google-centric neural architecture using React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS (WCAG AAA Compliant). 💻
🧠 The Brain (Gemini 3 Flash): High-speed multimodal reasoning for visual analysis, sentence refinement, and structured JSON responses.
🗣️ The Voice (Gemini 2.5 Flash TTS): High-quality, lifelike speech output.
🔌 Gemini Live API: WebSocket-based connection streaming raw 16-bit PCM audio and JPEG frames for sub-second latency.
🎧 Audio Engineering: Custom engine built with the Web Audio API to handle binary conversion (Float32 to Int16) without heavy libraries.
🧗Challenges & Learning
🏗️ Audio Encoding: Implementing binary conversion directly in the browser was a complex engineering hurdle.
🔇 Autoplay Policies: Managing AudioContext states to ensure the AI's voice is heard immediately.
🎥 Camera Selection: Robust fallback logic to ensure the rear camera is selected on mobile devices.
⏱️ Latency: Balancing video frame rates (~2fps) with audio buffers for an instantaneous feel.
🏆Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
✍️ Intelligent Linguistic Refinement: We engineered a "Refinement Engine" that takes telegraphic emoji or symbol sequences (e.g., "Water want") and transforms them into dignified, natural language ("I would like some water, please").
📸 The Context Cam Revolution: We built a system that "sees" the environment and instantly generates relevant vocabulary, eliminating the need for users to manually hunt through deep folder structures. Vision-Driven Vocabulary: We developed a pipeline where Gemini 3 Flash analyzes the "Context Cam" feed to identify objects and intent, then automatically generates a tailored set of emojis that are highly relevant to the user’s immediate physical environment.
🤝 Seamless Live Video: We successfully enabled a real-time, conversational "Sighted Guide" experience, allowing users with vision loss to have a fluid dialogue with their surroundings via a live camera feed.
🌉 Contextual Bridging: We proved that multimodal AI can drastically reduce the cognitive load required for finding specific words during high-stakes communication.
🎨 WCAG AAA UI/UX Standards: We designed a sleek, modern interface that doesn't just look good but meets the strictest international accessibility standards for clinical use.
🏎️ Performance Optimization: By implementing a custom binary audio engine, we reduced "time-to-speech" latency by over 60%, making AI conversation feel human rather than robotic.
🎯 Zero-Search Communication: Through the Eden Assistant and Context Cam, we achieved a "no-search" UI where the most important words find the user, instead of the user finding the words. By aligning generated emojis with the visual scene, we eliminated the "search barrier," allowing users to communicate about what they see without ever having to navigate through deep folder structures or drawers.
🎙️ Hands-Free Autonomy (The Eden Assistant): We engineered a truly hands-free gateway for users with low vision; a simple "tap anywhere" trigger activates voice-guided navigation, removing the frustration of searching for specific touch targets.
🏫 The Great Equalizer: Classroom Impact
🍎 Social Participation: In the cafeteria, a child can order independently: "I want the apple, please."
🔬 Active Learning: Vision Pal describes science experiments in real-time.
🙋 Teacher Interaction: A child can ask: "I finished my work; what should I do next?"
💸 Zero Hardware Cost: Runs on any smartphone. No $15,000 price tags. 📱
