Inspiration

Our inspiration springs from a collective passion for environmental stewardship. With one of us immersed in the depths as a professional scuba diver, our team was introduced to the urgent call for ocean conservation. Since the ocean generates half of the oxygen we breathe, it is clear how important it is to the health of the entire world.

We are devoted to meeting this urgent demand because we genuinely want to provide the next generation of researchers with important knowledge about ocean health. Our goal is clear: give children a deep awareness of the condition of the ocean and motivate them to take concrete steps to protect it. Understanding the ability of video games to captivate and instruct the attention of the younger generation, we're committed to creating an immersive experience that not only educates but also deeply instills a feeling of responsibility toward our aquatic ecosystems.

What it does

Our game provides a strong platform for reaching out to young people and bringing attention to the urgent need for ocean protection. Our goal is to captivate children's attention and cultivate a profound comprehension of the significance of maintaining the health of our world through our interactive and captivating design. Moreover, we aim to empower youth by highlighting the fact that they too bear the responsibility for environmental stewardship, thereby promoting active involvement in preserving the future of our world.

Our game presents a captivating storyline, inviting users to delve into pressing environmental issues like recycling, habitat conservation, and overfishing. By immersing players in these challenges, we aim to raise awareness and ignite a passion for ocean preservation. Beyond the digital realm, we empower players to become active stewards through tangible opportunities and resources, enabling them to make meaningful contributions to local water ecosystems.

How we built it

The core of our project is the strategic integration of technology; to realize our goal, we make use of Google Sites and Scratch. With careful cooperation and a dedication to diversity, each member of the team contributed significantly, building cohesiveness and productivity. Our ability to work together harmoniously allowed us to combine creativity and functionality to create a polished website and game that accurately and professionally represent our idea.

Challenges we ran into

Getting around our differing points of view was a difficult task. As ardent environmentalists, we had a ton of ideas for solving the urgent problems facing our world during our brainstorming sessions. Although at first unsure which cause to support—clean energy or habitat conservation—each had strong points. In the end, we decided to address habitat protection, specifically the water domain. We made this decision due to the fact that our staff has extensive experience in this field as well as the increased public awareness of concerns related to maritime conservation. Our common dedication to protecting the environment brought us together despite the early disagreements.

Finding the best delivery strategy for our proposal proved to be somewhat difficult. We debated between using an app or a website to properly communicate our idea. After careful deliberation, we decided on a synergistic strategy that combines an engaging game with an auxiliary website. With this choice, we can be confident that our audience will be engaged and that our vision will be communicated in a dynamic and immersive way.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are quite proud of what we've accomplished. Above all, our captain leads by example, leading the team with unwavering determination and ensuring that we make steady progress toward our objective. We are also quite proud of our creative strategy for involving the younger generation and incorporating their viewpoints in solving this global issue. What's even more impressive is that we built this project entirely on our own, proving our commitment and capacity to work without outside help.

What we learned

Before diving into the field of ocean conservation, our group did a lot of study and found some important information. We found that rising carbon dioxide emissions are driving worrisome phenomena known as ocean acidification, which poses a serious threat to marine ecosystems. Rising CO2 levels cause seawater to become more acidic, endangering aquatic life and coral reefs. Given the urgency, we stress how important it is to support sustainable energy programs. In addition, our investigation into the health of coral reefs revealed a range from Very Good to Critical, which is crucial for assessing ecosystem resilience and comprehending how humans affect conservation efforts.

In addition, we have grown both personally and professionally during this journey. Jerry studied the complex sciences of ocean acidification so that he could better explain and instruct his colleagues. Austin refined his coding skills and led the game's development in tandem with our teamwork. Chloe became a shining example of leadership; she was skilled at creating unity and a harmonious team dynamic, skillfully bridging divisions within our group. Along the way, we've not only started a mission but also developed personally thanks to our newfound knowledge and understanding.

What's next for Ocean Knights: Guardians of the Oceano

After cultivating awareness and respect for the aquatic domain, we will proceed to enable these motivated young people to apply their newly acquired knowledge to practical activities. Our goal is to provide children with the tools and chances they need to actively participate in environmental projects, such as sustainable living habits and neighborhood cleanups.

In addition, we hope to raise a new generation of activists who support ocean protection. We hope that by encouraging a sense of accountability and ownership, these young ambassadors will raise awareness and rally support for more projects. Our goal is to address this important worldwide issue with more resources and attention by working together.
