Inspiration

Early on in our brainstorming, we decided we wanted to create something to promote sustainability to protect the environment. However, environmental conservation is such a vast topic we had to narrow it down. When brainstorming and researching ideas on social good, we realized all of the problems associated with ocean pollution, overfishing, and more. However, we also wanted our website to be more interactive than a simple website, so we coded in games and quizzes based on different issues affecting the oceans today.

What it does

Our website has two main features: information and games. In the information sections, users are introduced to different issues affecting our oceans and how they can help. The second feature-- games-- are a way to introduce the complex issues of ocean pollution in simple terms to people of all ages and education levels.

How we built it

We used Repl.it for our Html, Css, and JavaScript. We made different files for all of our webpages and a file for our Css. For the games and some of the quizzes, we used Code.org to create our interactive games using a combination of imported, created, and preexisting images.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest problems we faced while coding our website was with where to make our games. Construct 3 didn't allow for collaboration on their website, so we struggled to find a website that was both a) accessible to beginners, b) compatible of Chromebooks, and c) allowed for some collaboration.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're most proud of our games and our dropdown menu. Both of these features took a long time to straighten out, but when we finished, the end result was something we were incredibly proud of. Without these features, our website wouldn't be as user friendly as it is now.

What we learned

We learned much about coding with CSS. Most of us were fairly new to coding, so really, we learned HTML, CSS, and JavaScript all in the span of 24 hours.

What's next for Ocean Devotion

Next for Ocean Devotion, we want to compile a page of ongoing opportunities to help users directly impact the environment. In the future, we want to expand our reach through social media, blog posts, videos, and more.
