Inspiration
We wanted to create an e-commerce fashion company that encourages creativity and provides its users with a passive source of income for their designs. There aren't any companies out there providing this kind of service to its users, so we thought this would be a great innovation in the clothing sector as it provides opportunities for bright-minded people.
What it does
Our luxury streetwear company gives users the ability to design clothes on our website and upload them onto our community forum. Other users then upvote or downvote various posts and every week we select clothing designs from the top-rated posts and produce them for the public. We then give 50% of the profits we made from the piece of clothing to the designer that made it. This allows to simultaneously provide clothing that members of the community truly want and reward individual designers for their work of designing them.
How we built it
We coded this website using React with Material UI as our component library. We also used flexbox and CSS grid to nicely layout the different parts of each page. On the Create page, we coded the T-shirt designer as an SVG editor where you can upload your own images to place onto your design or use the included shape and text objects. These designs are then uploaded to Firebase and stored into Cloud Firestore for retrieval on the Community page. We are also using Firebase Static Hosting to serve our compiled React code.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge we ran into was creating the clothing-making tool on our website. We originally just wanted to let users upload photos of their clothing designs onto the site, but we decided to implement the clothing creating tool to improve the user's experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are really proud of ourselves for actually managing to finish this project. This project seemed like a long shot initially, but we managed to persevere and work collaboratively to efficiently get it done.
What we learned
The most important thing we probably learned was the value of teamwork and the importance of having trust in the abilities of your teammates. Every member of our team ran into some trouble while trying to accomplish the tasks they were responsible for, so we really had to work together to find new solutions to the problems we were facing.
What's next for Obvia Collections
We plan on moving forward with Obvia Collections beyond just this Hackathon so we plan to improve the clothing customization tool on our website to give people the option to create more types of clothing. Additionally, we plan to implement a login and signup system so that users can securely post on the community page and easily track shipments. Also, we plan to incorporate a bi-monthly newsletter that will send emails to users, which would help them keep up-to-date on new releases.
