Inspiration

Around half of all people living with chronic illnesses do not take their medication as prescribed, a problem that has remained virtually unchanged for more than two decades according to the World Health Organization. We discovered that forgetting is only one part of the story. Many patients stop because they feel healthy, worry about side effects, become overwhelmed by complicated medication schedules, or simply do not understand why completing treatment is important.

Existing healthcare applications are excellent at helping patients consult doctors or purchase medicine, while reminder applications are effective at sending notifications. However, very few solutions try to understand why a patient misses a dose and respond with the right support. That gap inspired us to build Obatin.

Our goal is simple. We want every missed dose to become an opportunity for education instead of another step toward treatment failure.

What It Does

Obatin is an AI-powered medication adherence companion designed to support patients throughout their recovery journey.

Patients can quickly add medications by scanning a pharmacy receipt or a medicine label. AI automatically extracts the prescription details and creates a personalized medication schedule. Smart reminders help patients take every dose on time while low-stock notifications ensure medicines never unexpectedly run out.

When a patient misses a dose, Obatin asks why. Instead of displaying a generic reminder, the application provides personalized educational guidance based on the patient's reason, whether they forgot, felt healthy, experienced side effects, or ran out of medication.

To support long-term recovery, Obatin also provides an integrated healthcare ecosystem consisting of:

  • AI-powered prescription scanning using OCR.
  • Smart medication reminders with low-stock notifications.
  • AI health companion for medication-related questions.
  • Learning Center with trusted educational content.
  • Progress tracker for medication adherence and symptoms.
  • Mood check to monitor emotional well-being.
  • AI-generated doctor reports summarizing adherence history.
  • Family Mode with WhatsApp reminders for caregivers.

Together, these features transform medication adherence from an invisible problem into actionable information for patients, families, and healthcare professionals.

How We Built It

Obatin is built with a modern cloud-native architecture.

The mobile application is developed using React Native, while the backend is written in Go with PostgreSQL as the primary database. The system is containerized using Docker and deployed on Google Cloud Platform.

Artificial intelligence plays an important role throughout the application. The Gemini API extracts medication information from pharmacy receipts and medicine labels, powers the AI health companion, and generates concise doctor reports based on medication adherence, reported symptoms, and missed-dose history.

Medication reminders are scheduled using Cloud Scheduler and delivered through Firebase Cloud Messaging, while WhatsApp API integration allows trusted family members to receive reminders whenever additional support is needed.

Challenges We Ran Into

The biggest challenge was realizing that medication adherence is primarily a human problem rather than a technical one.

Designing reliable reminder scheduling across different medications and treatment durations required careful backend logic. OCR also had to remain accurate across different pharmacy receipt formats while still allowing users to edit incorrect results.

Another major challenge was designing AI responses that feel supportive rather than judgmental. We spent significant time refining prompts so the AI educates and encourages patients without providing medical diagnoses or dosage recommendations.

Balancing helpful AI assistance with patient safety became one of the most important design principles throughout development.

What We Learned

Building Obatin taught us that successful digital health products require much more than advanced technology.

Patients need empathy as much as reminders. Small interactions, such as asking why a dose was missed instead of simply marking it incomplete, can completely change the user's experience.

We also learned how AI can responsibly assist healthcare by reducing repetitive tasks, improving health literacy, and helping patients communicate more effectively with doctors, while still recognizing that medical decisions should always remain in the hands of licensed healthcare professionals.
