Project Story
Inspiration
The inspiration for our Privacy Audit & Recommendations Tool came from the growing concern for online privacy. With the internet being an integral part of our lives, users often unknowingly expose their personal data to various websites. We wanted to create a tool that empowers users to take control of their online privacy.
What it does
Our tool offers a comprehensive solution for website privacy analysis. It allows users to input any website URL, and it performs a privacy audit on that site. The tool checks for tracking cookies, third-party trackers, data sharing practices, and more. It calculates a privacy score and provides personalized recommendations to improve the website's privacy practices.
How we built it
We built the Privacy Audit & Recommendations Tool using a stack of web technologies. The front end is developed with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create an intuitive and user-friendly interface. We utilized Node.js and Express.js to set up a server for handling user requests and performing website audits. For privacy analysis, we integrated the Oasis Privacy Layer (OPL) to enhance the accuracy and depth of our audits.
Challenges we ran into
OPL Integration: Integrating Oasis Privacy Layer was challenging due to the complexity of privacy analysis. We had to delve deep into OPL's documentation and adapt it to our tool's requirements.
Real-time Tracking Prevention: Implementing real-time tracking prevention was a technical hurdle as it involved manipulating network requests and scripts on the fly.
User Experience: Ensuring a smooth and intuitive user experience while conducting in-depth privacy analysis required careful design and development.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully integrating Oasis Privacy Layer to enhance the accuracy of privacy audits.
- Implementing real-time tracking prevention, offering users more control over their privacy.
- Providing users with clear and actionable recommendations to improve website privacy.
- Creating an easy-to-use tool that empowers individuals to make informed decisions about the websites they visit.
What we learned
Throughout the project, we learned about the intricacies of web privacy and the challenges of implementing privacy-focused features. We gained a deep understanding of privacy analysis techniques and the importance of user education in the digital age.
What's next for Privacy Audit & Recommendations Tool
In the future, we plan to expand the tool's capabilities by:
- Incorporating machine learning for more advanced privacy analysis.
- Adding support for compliance checks with specific privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
- Developing browser extensions and mobile apps for even broader accessibility.
- Collaborating with website owners to encourage privacy improvements based on user feedback.
Our goal is to make online privacy accessible and manageable for everyone, and we believe our Privacy Audit & Recommendations Tool is a step in the right direction.
