Inspiration

XR Headsets have become incredibly pricy paperweights. Users buy them, play Beat Saber for a few days, then let them collect dust forever. We all see the potential of this medium; it's why we came to Reality Hack in the first place. Our group is tired of empty promises about the future of XR. It's here. And it's time to realize it. We are here to solve the desert of XR content. We are Oasis.

What it does

We are a curated spatial content creation platform. We leveraged the features of the newest high-quality consumer XR headset: the Apple Vision Pro (AVP). Our product is geared towards consumers and artists of music experience. During the hackathon, we produced a full-featured development toolkit made for designers to create unique, dynamic, interactive spatial music experiences. The platform is our business, but to showcase our medium, we designed a custom spatial music experience to the tune of Elton John's Rocketman (#DeepSpatial). In our demo, you'll be able to first-hand experience a variety of the tools we've made and the capabilities of the AVP.

How we built it

We worked directly with the native visionOS API. This involved various Apple packages, but primarily based around their new RealityKit.

Challenges we ran into

The novelty of the medium means a desperate lack of community support, developer documentation, and powerful toolsets. Everything we made, we made ourselves. We designed a custom declarative animation library, real-time sound mixing environment, custom gesture handling, and (although we did not demonstrate it in the hack) developed a networking layer for multi-user experiences.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Showcasing a valuable subset of the capabilities the Apple Vision Pro provides.
  • Developing custom engine for the experience (real-time Spatial Audio mixing, custom timeline animations)
  • Integrating our whole team's skillsets:
    • architecture, audio engineering, software development, theatrical design!

What we learned

Native development on the frontier of new platforms can be a struggle! But if you really want to harness the power of a tool, it allows the most direct hardware access.

What's next for Oasis

Passing Go, collecting $1B, and forever changing the Mixed Reality content economy!
