Project Inspiration:

We first were inspired by movie theatre apps and the ways in which they allow you to order food prior to your movie starting- even prior to being at the theatre- and we expanded that to “well, what if you could choose your seat?” Personally, my TikTok For You Page is filled to the brim with videos of reddit stories, many of which are horror stories about travel experiences, and that got us thinking:

What if you could choose who you sit by on a plane?

Problem

Traveling is stressful, and there are no existing solutions that provide relief for the customer while also being sustainable for the airline.

Solution

We want to create a less stressful environment for those who travel, and with this we need to work with the airlines themselves- we need to create a profitable business model that can align both the interests of the airline (profit) and the passengers (comfort.) People are willing to pay for comfort, especially those who fly frequently; by charging a small premium for booking based on demographic information, airlines can ensure they’re still meeting profit margins while also ensuring a good, stress-free experience for the customer, creating brand loyalty and customer satisfaction.

Why It Matters

It places the experience of the flight in the hands of the customer and helps relieve uncertainties about the flight. Further, our prototype demonstrates just how easy it is to incorporate our solution into their already existing software.

Development Process

We both went into this having never developed for mobile before, but we knew that we wanted to select a framework that would not limit us to just Android or iOS; we chose to develop our features using React Native and Node.js. We started by creating an Agile-style board, and from there we decided which features were, to us, the ones we wanted to sell, and one really kept sticking out to us: viewing seat demographics when purchasing tickets through the app. Our goal was to lessen the amount of stress caused by flying, and these features not only would be attractive to customers, but show potential to increase revenue for airlines as well.

Challenges We Faced

We had too many ideas, and we spent a lot of time focusing on things that would only take time away from our key feature- the demographics solution. When speaking with our mentors, we noticed that this demographic solution was the only feature that really clicked with them, and they encouraged us to not chase after features that every airline has, but instead spend time fully fleshing out one idea and really making sure it is sound.

Takeaway Experience

What can we take away from this experience- The both of us were blown away by the value of every single conversation we had with our mentors- each and every conversation was dense with information, and served to enrich our project in vastly different ways; each mentor came in with an entirely different perspective (consumer, investor, and airline business for the purpose of this explanation) that shaped entirely how we present this product that we have come up with- their feedback is something that will stick with us not only for the duration of this competition, but in future development projects throughout our careers. Further, we both learned a valuable skill- mobile development using React Native and Node.js. We both can envision a future for ourselves in mobile development- even with the time constraints, the development process of these features were enjoyable and exciting throughout the entire build process.
