Inspiration

We were inspired to create this app based off our client's request. Our client is an Industrial Engineering Technology counselor here at our school, Waipahu High. Our client, Tracee Kinjo, expressed the struggle that she experiences when students enter her office not knowing the requirements of a certain college. Therefore, we wanted to relieve her stress by creating an app to solve this problem.

What it does

Our app provides students with general information about colleges here on Oahu. The type of information we provided was : in-state tuition, out of state tuition, GPA requirements, SAT and ACT scores (if applicable), acceptance rate, and the address. Along with this information, we also provided links to both the official site and the majors or programs of study that the colleges provide.

How we built it

The program that we used to construct our app was MIT app-inventor 2. The first step we made in constructing this app was designing the Graphics User Interface(GUI). We designed our screens in a manner that made it easy for users to navigate. We had one screen dedicated to the homepage, another screen dedicated to a list of colleges on Oahu and multiple screens dedicated to a certain college. The functionality of this app inventor was fairly simple because the "coding" was placing blocks together. By this we mean that, MIT app inventor 2 provided us with pre-made blocks that allowed to us redirect buttons and screens and websites.

Challenges we ran into

The challenges that we ran into was trying to incorporate all of our clients needs while still having enough memory to use. For example, our client wanted us to add a screen that categorizes each college's major into our school's pathways. Pathways included: Arts and Communication, Business, Industrial Engineering Technology, Health Services, Natural Resources, and Public and Human services. Due to this, we had to figure out a way to hide certain functions on one screen. We searched online, asked questions on forums and asked our peers for help, but no one absolutely sure on how to do it. This was a set back in our timeline because it took us a while to figure it out. Another challenge we ran into was not being able to link a Google Maps function onto each college screen.

Accomplishments that we proud of

We are proud that our efforts were recognized enough that got us this far in the competition. We are also proud of how well and how efficient we worked together in order to complete this app.

What we learned

A couple things that we learned from creating this app was learning how the app inventor's blocks work and function together. Learning this alone was one of the hardest things about this project. We had no prior knowledge of MIT app inventor and therefore we were learning throughout the process.

What's next for Oahu College Finder

To further expand on our app, we hope to that we will be able to provide information for not only colleges on Oahu, but for the state of Hawaii and more. We plan to figure out a way to overcome the memory space issue so that we can more features onto our app.
