Inspiration

Shopping online is already convenient, but it can still feel surprisingly manual. Users have to search through products, compare options, decide what fits their needs, and finally complete the payment process themselves.

We started thinking: what if AI could become an active shopping partner instead of just another chatbot?

That idea became O-BUY.

We wanted to explore how AI and PayPal could work together to create a more natural commerce experience, where AI helps users discover and decide, while PayPal provides a trusted way to complete the transaction.

Our goal was not to replace the user. It was to reduce the friction between "I want something" and "I bought it."

What it does

O-BUY is an AI-powered shopping experience built around the concept of agentic commerce.

Users can interact with O-BUY to explore products, get AI-assisted recommendations, evaluate options, and move toward checkout.

The experience combines AI assistance with PayPal-powered payments, connecting product discovery and decision-making with a real commerce flow.

Instead of making AI the entire shopping experience, we designed it to work alongside the user:

Discover → Understand → Decide → Pay

This creates a shopping experience that feels more guided and intelligent while keeping the user in control of the final purchase.

How we built it

We built O-BUY as a modern web application with a responsive interface focused on keeping the shopping journey simple.

The application combines an AI-powered shopping experience, product discovery, recommendation logic, and PayPal payment integration into one flow.

We focused heavily on the interaction between the AI experience and the commerce experience. Rather than building separate AI and payment features, we wanted them to feel like parts of the same journey.

The frontend was built with modern web technologies, while APIs connect the application to the AI and payment functionality.

Throughout development, we continuously tested the experience from a user's perspective: how quickly can someone understand what O-BUY does, find something relevant, and reach a payment decision?

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was making AI useful without making the experience feel complicated.

It is easy to add a chatbot to an e-commerce website. The harder part is making the AI actually contribute to the shopping journey.

We also had to think carefully about how AI recommendations, product information, user decisions, and payment should connect together.

Another challenge was creating an interface that could communicate a relatively complex concept — AI-powered agentic commerce — without requiring users to understand the technology behind it.

We solved this by focusing on the flow and keeping the interface as clear and intentional as possible.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that O-BUY became more than a concept or static prototype.

We built a working commerce experience that brings together AI, product discovery, and PayPal payments in one application.

We're especially proud of the fact that the project explores agentic commerce from the user's perspective rather than focusing only on the underlying technology.

We also challenged ourselves to make the experience feel like a real product that someone could actually use, rather than something built only for a hackathon demo.

What we learned

This project changed the way we think about AI in commerce.

We learned that adding AI is not automatically the same as creating an intelligent experience.

The most valuable role for AI can be reducing the amount of work users need to do — helping them understand their options, make decisions, and take action.

We also learned that payments are an important part of the agentic commerce experience. An AI shopping experience becomes much more meaningful when it can connect naturally to the real transaction layer.

Most importantly, we learned to design around the user's intent instead of designing around the technology.

What's next for O-BUY

O-BUY is just the beginning.

We envision a future where AI shopping agents can understand a user's intent, discover products across different sources, compare options, personalize recommendations, and help coordinate purchases — while still keeping the user in control.

The next step for O-BUY would be making the agent more capable and context-aware, expanding product discovery, and exploring deeper agentic commerce workflows with PayPal.

Our long-term vision is simple:

Make buying something online feel less like navigating a website and more like having an intelligent assistant that helps you get exactly what you need.
