For the New Yorker looking to pivot careers and revive their life!

When wanting a change in careers, it may feel very daunting to be starting from square one. A lot of us feel either the overwhelm of not knowing where to start or the imposter syndrome of feeling like we aren't qualified to try. Especially in New York. Everyone seems to be leaps ahead of you. I also found that under 50% of New Yorkers have postsecondary degrees, that gap increasing when you look at numbers based on race or borough. This AI web app is the one stop shop beacon for their career change.

What does it do?

NYCRevive is an AI powered app to help the user prepare for their new career search. There is three pages featured currently.

  1. The Resume Tailor: Users can enter the work experience they already have and select from one of the job titles and get an ATS tailored resume for that Job Role. The resume is built in the background using Gemini's AI.
  2. The Upskill Page: This is a central list of some options for NYC specific upskilling.
  3. The Career Quiz: For those looking for somewhere to start, this Gemini powered Career quiz will take your answers on job preferences and suggest a career the user might enjoy.

How was the app was built?

This web app was built using Google's AI studio. Using 25 regular human language prompts, I was able to generate a fully fledged web application. Because this was my first time using Google AI Studio, I first started by creating an MVP of just the Resume Tailoring Engine. Then as I got a hang on how the tool worked and liked the resulting engine, I iterated from there. I then worked on adding the upskilling page and finally the career quiz. I then decided to deploy the application using Vercel, as their hosting and deploying process was very quick and intuitive.

Challenges I ran into

My biggest challenge was going from Google AI studio to the Vercel hosted platform. There were some background processes that I didn't know were happening and when I deployed the code in Vercel, the AI engines were no longer working. Luckily the Google AI Studio chatbot was able to make the changes necessary and provide instructions for how I could get it working.

What I learned

Prior to this hackathon, I've never used Google AI studio or Vercel. While I am studying Front End Development, I don't yet have the skills that would be needed to build this entire web app, much less in a matter of a couple hours.

What's next for NYCRevive

I would like to expand the existing features. There are a lot of features I could add, but right now these are the ways I would like to expand the site. For the Resume Tailoring engine, I'd like to include more job title options as well as an option to enter a specific job description and tailor the resume for that. For the Upskilling page, I'd like to include more bootcamp/workshop options, and maybe use an EventBrite API to pull in local educational or professional events upcoming. For the Career Quiz, I'd like it to be a more comprehensive quiz that encompasses more resulting careers. I might even like to turn it into a chatbot to allow for more open ended answers and more results.
