NyaySaathi: AI-Powered Legal Intelligence and Access to Justice
Inspiration
People often avoid seeking justice because they do not know where to begin. Victims of cyber fraud, harassment, domestic violence, and consumer scams frequently face fear, confusion, high legal costs, and limited access to reliable guidance. These barriers become even greater for international students, migrant workers, and visitors navigating unfamiliar legal systems.
We built NyaySaathi to bridge this gap by transforming legal confusion into clear next steps, organized evidence, and accessible professional assistance.
What It Does
NyaySaathi is a privacy-first AI legal companion that helps individuals understand their legal situations, explore relevant laws, organize evidence, and connect with suitable legal professionals.
Unlike conventional legal chatbots that primarily generate answers, NyaySaathi supports the entire journey from initial disclosure to structured case preparation and lawyer handoff.
Core Features
1. Confidential AI-Powered Intake
Users describe their situations through a conversational interface designed for sensitive issues such as cyberstalking, online extortion, workplace harassment, domestic violence, tenant disputes, and consumer fraud. The system extracts relevant facts while minimizing unnecessary personal data collection.
2. Hybrid RAG-Based Legal Intelligence
NyaySaathi combines semantic search, keyword retrieval, reranking, and large language models to retrieve relevant legislation, court judgments, and authoritative legal resources. It generates source-grounded explanations with citations, jurisdictional context, and update information wherever available.
3. Similar-Case Analysis
The system identifies relevant precedents and explains how comparable cases were handled, which factors influenced their outcomes, and how those cases differ from the user's situation. It uses educational scenarios to explain potential legal pathways without guaranteeing outcomes.
4. Intelligent Evidence Collection
NyaySaathi helps users identify potentially relevant evidence, including screenshots, emails, messages, transaction records, and documents. OCR extracts information from uploaded files, while automated timeline generation organizes incidents, dates, parties, and supporting evidence.
5. Jurisdiction-Aware Legal Guidance
The platform maps reported circumstances to potentially relevant laws, legal provisions, procedures, and official reporting channels in the selected jurisdiction. It highlights uncertainty, missing information, and situations requiring professional legal review.
6. Case Risk and Context Analysis
The system identifies evidence gaps, procedural considerations, potential risks, and relevant power imbalances. Rather than declaring guilt or guaranteeing success, it explains factors that may affect the case and where further assessment is needed.
7. Automated Lawyer-Ready Case Briefs
NyaySaathi converts unstructured conversations into structured case files containing:
- Incident timelines and key facts.
- Evidence inventories and missing-document checklists.
- Potentially relevant legal provisions and supporting sources.
- Questions requiring professional clarification.
- User objectives and suggested next steps.
This helps users prepare for consultations and reduces repetitive fact-gathering for lawyers.
8. Integrated Lawyer Discovery and Connection
Users can discover legal professionals based on jurisdiction, practice area, relevant experience, availability, and verified credentials where supported. With explicit consent, users can share their case briefs and connect through messaging, calls, or consultations.
9. Privacy-First Design
The platform prioritizes data minimization, encryption, access controls, consent-based sharing, and controlled retention. Tamper-evident audit logs can support accountability without exposing confidential case information on a public blockchain.
How We Built It
NyaySaathi integrates multiple technologies into a coordinated legal-assistance workflow:
- NLP: Understands user narratives and extracts relevant facts.
- Hybrid RAG: Retrieves legal sources using semantic and keyword-based search.
- Large Language Models: Generate explanations, follow-up questions, and structured case summaries.
- OCR and Document Processing: Extract information from uploaded documents and evidence.
- Case Analysis: Identifies relevant factors, uncertainty, procedural risks, and evidence gaps.
- Secure Backend: Implements privacy controls, access management, and consent-based information sharing.
- Lawyer Integration: Enables professional discovery and structured case handoff.
System Workflow
Confidential Intake → Fact Extraction → Legal Retrieval → Source-Grounded Analysis → Evidence Organization → Case Brief Generation → Lawyer Handoff
Challenges We Ran Into
Building trustworthy legal AI presented several challenges:
- Fragmented legal data: Legal documents vary in format, terminology, jurisdiction, and quality.
- Hallucination risks: Legal claims require reliable retrieval, citation verification, and current sources.
- Privacy and safety: Sensitive disclosures require careful data handling and a supportive interface.
- Legal uncertainty: Similar cases can have different outcomes depending on their facts and applicable law.
- Bias and power dynamics: Contextual factors must be considered without reinforcing stereotypes or treating assumptions as evidence.
- Multilingual complexity: Legal meaning must be preserved across languages.
- Responsible automation: The platform must distinguish preliminary legal information from advice requiring a qualified professional.
We address these challenges through source-grounded retrieval, uncertainty communication, privacy controls, structured evidence collection, and escalation to human expertise.
What Makes NyaySaathi Different?
NyaySaathi is designed as a complete legal-access workflow, rather than a standalone chatbot or lawyer directory.
- Conversation to case preparation: Transforms a user's account into a structured, evidence-linked case brief.
- Answers to verifiable legal intelligence: Grounds explanations in retrieved legal sources and relevant precedents.
- Information to action: Helps users identify evidence, understand available procedures, and determine when professional assistance is needed.
- AI to human collaboration: Bridges automated case preparation with qualified legal professionals.
- Generic to jurisdiction-aware assistance: Accounts for the applicable legal system and the currency of its sources.
- Privacy by design: Minimizes unnecessary disclosure and gives users control over sharing their information.
Our central innovation is bringing legal retrieval, evidence intelligence, structured case preparation, and professional handoff together in one user-centered platform.
