Inspiration

Millions of women in India face legal challenges every day, yet many never seek help—not because they lack courage, but because they lack access. Legal systems can be intimidating, expensive, and filled with jargon. We wanted to bridge that gap by creating a platform that makes legal support understandable, accessible, and immediate. NyayaSahaya was born from a simple belief: justice should not depend on legal literacy, financial privilege, or location.

What it does

NyayaSahaya is an AI-powered legal assistant designed specifically for women in India. Users can describe their situation in plain language, without needing any legal knowledge.

The platform then:

  • Identifies the relevant legal domain, such as domestic violence, workplace harassment, divorce, inheritance, or cybercrime
  • Explains the user's rights in simple, jargon-free language
  • Generates a personalized, step-by-step action plan
  • Connects users to verified legal aid organizations, helplines, and government resources
  • Detects emergency situations and immediately surfaces crisis support options

It acts as a trusted first point of legal guidance, available anytime and anywhere.

How we built it

We built NyayaSahaya using a modern, scalable architecture focused on reliability, privacy, and user experience.

  • Frontend: React.js with Tailwind CSS for a clean, responsive interface
  • AI Engine: groq api for legal reasoning, empathetic communication, and multilingual understanding
  • Backend: Node.js with secure API routes
  • Knowledge Base: Curated Indian legal frameworks and a verified database of legal aid resources

We engineered specialized prompt pipelines that enable the AI to classify legal issues, explain rights clearly, generate actionable next steps, and recommend relevant support services.

Challenges we ran into

Building a legal assistant comes with significant responsibility.

  • Ensuring accuracy while simplifying complex legal concepts
  • Maintaining an empathetic tone for users in distress
  • Handling sensitive crisis situations safely
  • Preventing hallucinations in high-stakes legal contexts
  • Structuring outputs to remain both comprehensive and easy to understand
  • Designing for trust, privacy, and accessibility from the ground up

Balancing legal precision with user-friendly communication was our biggest technical challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a fully functional AI legal assistant tailored for Indian women
  • Achieved reliable legal domain detection across multiple categories
  • Integrated verified legal aid resources and emergency helplines
  • Designed a privacy-first experience with zero data storage
  • Created an intuitive interface that feels approachable, safe, and empowering
  • Delivered a solution with real-world social impact and scalability

Most importantly, we built something that can genuinely help people.

What we learned

This project taught us that great technology is not just about intelligence—it's about accessibility, trust, and empathy.

We learned how to:

  • Design AI systems for high-stakes domains
  • Engineer robust prompt architectures
  • Balance safety with usefulness
  • Build products that prioritize human needs over technical complexity
  • Translate complex legal systems into actionable guidance

It reinforced our belief that AI can be a powerful force for social good.

What's next for NyayaSahaya

Our vision extends far beyond the hackathon.

  • Add support for major Indian regional languages
  • Launch voice-based interactions for low-literacy users
  • Integrate WhatsApp for broader accessibility
  • Introduce document drafting for complaints, FIRs, and legal notices
  • Build NGO and pro bono lawyer referral networks
  • Expand to other underserved legal communities

NyayaSahaya is not just a project—it is the foundation of a more accessible legal future.
