Inspiration

meow

...we were inspired by fighter games and rhythm games, both genres that we really enjoy, and wanted to combine them in a unique way that was fun! We also wanted to make the characters catgirls as this would be really original as a theme, fun to draw sprites for and also cute :3 Also the background is the Radcliffe Camera because we're from Oxford.

What it does

lets you get out all your rage by punching a catgirl as a catgirl

...it's a 1v1 fighter game played with the keyboard, but you need to time attacks and movement perfectly to the music to get maximum damage, stun your opponent and get combos. There are air, ground and perfect/heavy attacks (with various multipliers), and animations/colour coded combo counters! The objective is to make your opponent lose all their health. You can play as many times as you want and it's pretty addictive.

How we built it

promgramig

...it's built with pygame, with multiple modularised files we used GitHub to coordinate over. The coding got hard at times, especially balancing the game and implementing rhythm mechanics ideas like much lower damage off beat and restricting combos. The hitbox code and visual polish/touches were also challenging but we didn't run into any devastating bugs.

Challenges we ran into

listening to metronome noises for 24 hours straight

...this is true. And the annoying rubber duck squeaks :( See above, but all in all it was pretty smooth going, we started with just getting the characters moving and slowly added in different combos/attacks/multipliers. The only real point of conflict was merge conflicts

Accomplishments that we're proud of

peter grifin death pose

...how polished and smooth and fun the game is in the end! We're all really proud of it. Shout out to Evie for doing the awesome art/animation.

What we learned

don't ever test your code, upload it to github and ask alex to

...lol. Sometimes merge conflicts and quick fixes broke other things oops. Luckily we had team members happy to playtest. We also learnt about cool hitbox class and beat quantising stuff.

What's next for Nyance Nyance Revolution: Beat Beat-Up

alex mousley as unlockable character

...we'll probably put it on itch at some point! It's fun and we want to challenge our friends to play it (and get clobbered to EDM in real time)
