Inspiration
We were inspired by the idea that true optimism originates from tackling a serious problem and turning it into an opportunity to change other's lives. In this case, we believed that the problem was homelessness in San Francisco, a prevalent issue in every part of the city.
What it does
The app starts off with gathering the user's details, their age, qualifications, education, special skills, and their current income. Based on that info, it picks the best option for them, whether it be job opportunities, shelter and housing, and assists them with basic needs.
How we built it
Used Flutter and Dart to make widgets which make up the app. Used Apify to get the Google Maps API to provide the local places (shelter, food, job opportunities). Complied in VS Code, with assistance from GitHub Copilot, and operates on the Android Studio emulator.
Challenges we ran into
We had a tough time finding a way to web scrape Google Maps as many API were either paid, or inefficient. After a considerable amount of searching, we decided on Apify. Additionally, it took some time to figure out the Android emulator.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of the fact that we actually made an app that can help people out in times of need, and give them more opportunities; an app not just for experience, but for aiding others.
What we learned
We've learned more about the issue of homelessness from this project, but on a technical level, how to effectively use Flutter.
What's next for nxt.home
We hope to add better features to the app such as a login page, and expand the range from San Francisco to a larger area
