Nurture — A Calm Digital Home for New Parents
It’s 2:00 a.m. A parent is holding a tired baby in one arm and a phone in the other, trying to remember the last feeding, track sleep, and figure out who to ask about a concern.
We built Nurture to make those moments easier.
The Problem
New parents juggle countless care details while exhausted. Feeding logs, sleep schedules, milestones, and important questions often end up scattered across different apps, notes, and memories. Finding the right support can be just as difficult.
Our Solution
Nurture is a mobile baby-care companion designed as an interactive home. Instead of navigating complicated dashboards, parents explore familiar rooms:
- Nursery: Track sleep and comfort.
- Kitchen: Log feedings and nutrition.
- Changing Area: Record diaper changes and daily care.
- Play Corner: Track growth, milestones, and activities.
- Living Room: Explore questions and find relevant professional support.
A daily summary and activity timeline help parents understand their baby's care history without scores, judgment, or unnecessary stress.
Our guiding principle is People over answers. Nurture does not diagnose or replace medical professionals. It helps parents organize observations and identify the kinds of qualified professionals who may be able to help.
How We Built It
Nurture uses Expo, React Native, and TypeScript for a cross-platform mobile experience, with layered illustrations and interactive room scenes. Our backend uses Node.js, Express, Prisma, and SQLite to support accounts, baby profiles, care tracking, and family sharing.
We also built an offline demo mode, authentication and security foundations, and accessibility features such as large touch targets and reduced-motion support.
What Makes Nurture Different?
Nurture transforms a collection of trackers into a familiar digital home. Its calm design reduces friction, its notes avoid judging parents, and its support features emphasize human connection over automated answers.
What's Next?
We hope to introduce verified professionals, secure consultation tools, stronger privacy controls, and real-parent testing to make Nurture even more helpful and trustworthy.
Our Vision
New parents don't need more noise. They need a calm place to remember, connect, and care.
Nurture brings everyday baby-care tracking and human support together in one welcoming space.
What it does
Nurture is a cross-platform baby-care companion that organizes parenting tasks into an interactive digital home. Parents can track sleep, feedings, diaper changes, growth, and milestones through familiar rooms, view daily activity summaries, and explore relevant professional support when questions arise. Nurture focuses on simple recordkeeping and human connection rather than judgment or automated diagnosis.
How we built it
We built Nurture using Expo, React Native, and TypeScript, with Expo Router for navigation and interactive, illustrated room scenes. Our backend uses Node.js, Express, TypeScript, Prisma, and SQLite to support accounts, baby profiles, care tracking, and family sharing. We also implemented an API service layer, offline demo mode, authentication, and accessibility features.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was making the interactive house enjoyable without slowing down essential tasks. We needed each room to feel memorable while keeping common actions quick and intuitive. We also had to coordinate frontend and backend development, maintain consistent API contracts, and approach sensitive baby-care information responsibly without presenting the app as a medical authority.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of creating a working cross-platform experience that combines multiple baby-care trackers into one welcoming interface. We brought together interactive rooms, daily summaries, family-sharing foundations, professional-directory experiences, and offline demo data. We're especially proud of building around our principle of People over answers.
What we learned
We learned that good design is about reducing effort, not simply adding features. A familiar interface can make complex tasks easier to navigate, while clear language and honest limitations are essential when building tools related to family health. We also learned the importance of a stable API contract and a shared service layer when developing frontend and backend systems in parallel.
What's next for Nurture
We want to introduce verified professionals, secure consultation workflows, stronger privacy and consent controls, and carefully moderated parent communities. We also plan to test Nurture with real families, improve the experience based on their feedback, and strengthen our backend infrastructure for production use. Our goal is to help parents feel more organized, supported, and connected.
