Inspiration
Quarantine has caused people to experience an influx of mental health struggles because of the negative effects of isolation. “Nurture” is a way to cope with these problems through self-awareness and reflection. Through “Nurture” brings together a community by providing other people’s insights into their daily lives. As social media tends to glamorize only the good parts of our lives, we wanted to shift this idea by having people post their goals and challenges, that way people feel empathy from other people’s posts.
What it does
We have three components to the app: the rose, thorn, and bud. Our users will use Nurture like a daily diary–the rose is something you have accomplished, the thorn is something you are challenged with, and lastly, the bud is something you want to work on. We also have other features like the Wellness Hub where you can see other people’s submissions and connect with them, and an Educational tab to showcase articles and resources for our users to scroll through.
How we built it
We built this platform by designing and demo-ing it on Figma, Flutter to make a draft interface, and Xcode for the coding aspect.
Challenges we ran into
A challenge we ran into was in developing the software, as none of us had experience developing for iOS and only had one member working on it. Additionally, there were a lot of components of Nurture to make into a mobile app and we were learning along the way. Our solution for the future is to create a flowchart and clearer process for how we would approach our project!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Everyone on our team is a first-time hacker so it was a very fun and engaging experience to understand what it takes to come together as a team to develop a prototype.
What we learned
As this was all of our first hackathons, we learned the difficulties of working under a time constraint as small as the 24 hours we were given.
What's next for Nurture
We think it would be great if we could actually continue developing Nurture into a usable platform, especially because of the lasting mental health effects from the pandemic and anxieties surrounding recent political events, and our climate crisis.
