Inspiration
The idea for NutriWell Plate came from a deeply personal place. Last year, a close family member was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Suddenly, every trip to the grocery store became a stressful puzzle – reading tiny nutrition labels, Googling ingredients on a phone, and still feeling uncertain about what was actually "healthy" for their specific condition.
What it does
NutriWell aligns perfectly with UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being (specifically Targets 3.4 on reducing NCDs and 3.8 on universal health access).
How we built it
Nutriwell is built using modern technology stack of node js and modern templating engine of ejs
Challenges we ran into
One major learning was real-time API filtering. Open Food Facts doesn't have a native "filter by health condition" endpoint, so I had to:
Fetch generic search results
Parse nutritional data from inconsistent API responses (sometimes units vary)
Apply custom filtering logic based on health goals
Handle missing data gracefully
This taught me resilience and creative problem-solving with imperfect data sources.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I learned about node js and built it from scratch
What we learned
About the food habits and it's impact on health
What's next for NutriWell
Making it more generic for all public uses
