Inspiration

The necessity of inclusion in nutritional health served as the impetus for NutriScanner. We acknowledged that a lot of people struggle to choose foods because of dietary restrictions, allergies, or lifestyle decisions. Our objective was to develop a tool that enables people from diverse backgrounds to make well-informed decisions that are in line with their dietary requirements.

What it does

With NutriScanner, consumers may quickly get nutritional data, such as calories, macronutrients, and allergies, by scanning the barcodes of food products. Users may ensure a more inclusive approach to food selections by entering their dietary preferences, such as vegan, vegetarian, or halal, and receiving notifications if a scanned item does not match their criteria.

How I built it

We developed NutriScanner by combining APIs from nutrition databases to retrieve real-time product information with Python and OpenCV for barcode scanning. The user-friendly interface was designed to be accessible to everyone, making it simple for those with different levels of computing expertise to navigate.

Challenges I ran into

One of the main difficulties we faced was figuring out how to efficiently use two APIs at once: one for allergy data and another for nutritional information retrieval. We had to handle many data types and make sure the information matched up properly in order to integrate these APIs. We learned a lot about API integration and data synchronization by having to create a reliable system for processing requests, handling errors, and processing answers. It took a lot of learning to balance these elements while preserving a seamless user experience, but in the end, it improved our development abilities.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We are pleased to have developed a tool that promotes inclusion and safety for those with dietary restrictions in addition to offering nutritional information. A major accomplishment for our team is the effective deployment of real-time scanning and precise allergy identification.

What I learned

We discovered during NutriScanner's development how crucial user input is to feature improvement. Additionally, we learned how difficult it is to integrate APIs and how important it is to build inclusively so that our program can serve a wide range of users.

What's next for NutriScanner

In the future, we want to improve the user interface and add more dietary options to NutriScanner's functionality. Our goal is to work with dietitians to offer tailored dietary advice and include machine learning algorithms to increase the precision of allergy identification. Our goal is to develop NutriScanner into a complete health tool that helps people on their path to improved diet and overall health.
