The inspiration behind NutriScan came from the need for a simple, personalized approach to nutrition. Many people struggle to interpret nutrition labels and make informed food choices that align with their dietary preferences and health goals. We wanted to create a tool that empowers users to make safer, healthier decisions effortlessly.

NutriScan scans nutrition labels and provides instant feedback on how well products align with users' dietary preferences. It evaluates ingredients and nutritional content, offering personalized recommendations to promote healthier eating habits and ensure food safety.

We built NutriScan using a combination of technologies. The frontend was developed with React, TailwindCSS, and Next.js, hosted on Vercel. The backend was constructed with Node.js and Express.js, and deployed on Render. For AI capabilities, we utilized Claude and AWS Bedrock to analyze nutrition labels and deliver personalized feedback.

We faced several challenges, including ensuring accurate label scanning, integrating AI for personalized recommendations, and maintaining a seamless user experience. Balancing speed and accuracy in label analysis was particularly challenging.

We are proud of creating a user-friendly app that effectively helps users make healthier dietary choices. The integration of AI to provide personalized recommendations is a significant achievement, as it enhances the user experience by delivering meaningful insights.

Throughout the development process, we learned a great deal about AI integration, user interface design, (authentication, HTTPS security, integration challenges when decoupling frontend and backend, and server-side script with Next.js.) and the importance of personalized nutrition. We also gained insights into the challenges of analyzing diverse nutrition labels and delivering instant feedback.

We plan to expand NutriScan’s capabilities by incorporating more detailed dietary guidelines, integrating barcode scanning, and enhancing AI algorithms for even more personalized recommendations. Additionally, we aim to include features that promote sustainable food choices.
